Big Picture
The best thing about IUP is the social scene. I would change the emphasis on sports- IUP is weak in school spirit. IUP could be bigger. People usually dont know what IUP is, or they think its a branch of IU. I spend most of my time on campus in Ackerman Hall, the Interior Design building. Decent college town, good bars and restaurants. IUP's administration is great! I work hand in hand with many of them being the president of the Panhellenic Association. NO school pride= boring. IUP is unusual in itself- its a small town feel with a lot of students. You typically recognize faces yet there are nearly 14,000 students. One experience I will never forget will be rushing Alpha Gamma Delta... going Greek has made me love IUP. Complaints usually are that the weather sucks, which it does.. it rains a LOT.
Academic Life
Yes, Professors know my name. My favorite class was Residential Design with Dr. Viggiano. We took field trips around the town to see how homes were built from start to finish. Least favorite are freshman level classes. Students study a lot.. a lot more than their parents probably think. Class participation is common if the class is after 11 am. Yes, IUP students have intellectual conversations outside of class. Students are competitive. The most unique class I have taken was religion 100. Interior design is a competitive major in the Health and Human Development department. We basically live in the building because ID takes up most of your free time when working on a project. I know that I could get a better education as for ID somewhere else, but there is no where else I would rather be! I do spend time with professors outside of class-- lunch, dinner, social gatherings. IUP's academic requirements are a little low, I wish they could raise the standards a little bit. IUP is definitely geared toward getting a job. I feel that IUP is a great place to learn and to get a degree, especially if you are in the business or criminology field.
Student Body
As a Greek woman I have worked with all of these groups and the experience has been great as I have learned a lot from this people. No one should feel out of place at IUP-- there is something for everyone to get involved with. Most students wear jeans and sweatshirts or tshirts to class. Yes, different types of students interact. Two tables would be black students, one would be of asian decent or exchange students, and one would be white. Most IUP students are from the Pittsburgh area. Financial backgrounds are typically middle to higher class. The campus as a whole is very politically aware. I would say more right than left. Yes, we all talk about the amount of money we will make one day.
The Best Things
Going Greek!
The Worst Things
The sports are boring
