Colleges in Illinois

Large universities, small liberal arts colleges and art schools are among the many different types of four-year, degree-granting institutions located throughout Illinois. Most colleges and universities in Illinois are privately funded, including several prestigious National Universities, but there are about a dozen public colleges and universities in the state. The majority of colleges and universities in Illinois are located in the greater Chicago area, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. Residents of Illinois can attend select public colleges and universities in eight states, including Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan and Missouri, through the Midwest Student Exchange Program and pay no more than 150 percent of the in-state tuition rate.
