Houston Baptist University was founded in November 1960 with the aim of establishing a Christian liberal arts university dedicated to the development of moral character, the enrichment of spiritual lives and the perpetuation of growth in Christian ideals. The mission of HBU is to provide a learning experience that instills in students a passion for academic, spiritual and professional excellence as a result of the central confession, "Jesus Christ is Lord."

Under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Robert B. Sloan Jr., HBU is making progress on many of the key initiatives in its unprecedented vision for higher education in America " The Ten Pillars: Faith and Reason in a Great City " that boldly promotes a biblical worldview in a world-class city. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, HBU offers academic programs in more than 40 undergraduate and 11 graduate areas of study through the University's College of Arts and Humanities, College of Science and Mathematics, Honors College, Graduate School, and Schools of Business, Education, and Nursing and Allied Health.
