| Mission | |
| School mission: | USM is Maine and northern New England's public comprehensive university, mixing strong liberal arts and sciences programs with exciting professional degree programs and the learning environment of a small New England college with the educational possibilities of a dynamic metropolitan institution. The University offers the intellectual challenge of its award-winning Honors Program, the outstanding Russell Scholars residential learning community, and multiple opportunities to extend the classroom to the community through civic engagement. Among USM's most outstanding programs are those in its award-winning School of Music, its highly selective School of Nursing, and its nationally recognized College of Education and Human Development, which offers school-based certification programs that ensure solid teacher preparation. Students will find considerable undergraduate research opportunities in archaeology, biology, environmental science, exercise science, or Franco-American studies, as well as creative opportunities in music theater and visual technology. The USM Osher Map Library houses among the finest collections of historic maps of any university in the world, and the USM Sampson Center for Diversity houses significant research collections for studying African American, Jewish, and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Mainers. USM faculty members are working to renew general education, which builds on outcomes-based course work and is generating national visibility. The annual Thinking Matters Conference has set the bar for a comprehensive undergraduate research program, and faculty members themselves are generating significantly increased external research funding, especially in biomedical and environmental toxicology research. Strong Division III athletics combined with the Portland region's blossoming creative economy, of which USM is an important part, provide a wonderful environment for a college experience. Overall, USM's significant contribution to the region's economic growth, cultural amenities, and social well-being ensures that the institution achieves its goal of national recognition for regional impact. |
