| School mission: | The University of Florida, the state's largest university, traces its beginnings to 1853. Today, it enrolls more than 51,000 students and is home to 16 colleges and more than 150 research centers and institutes. Since 1985, UF has been a member of the Association of American Universities, which includes the top 62 public and private institutions in North America. UF placed second among all universities in Kiplinger's Top Best Values in Public Colleges In-State (2008). Its freshmen retention rate of 94 percent is among the top 10 highest among public universities in the AAU.
