| Mission | |
| School mission: | The University of Mary Washington has long been known for its commitment to providing a stellar undergraduate, liberal arts education. Our faculty are devoted to teaching - without teaching assistants - and are able to provide individualized attention to their students. An education at UMW, with multiple opportunities for student research and service learning, prepares graduates for outstanding careers or for entry into graduate school. Internship opportunities abound not only in Fredericksburg, but also an hour's drive away in either Washington, DC or Richmond, VA. A wide range of programs includes strong majors in political science/international affairs, English, biology, psychology, earth/environmental science, history, visual and performing arts, economics, and business. Also distinctive are historic preservation and a new concentration in creative writing. UMW's campus is one of the nation's most beautiful, with classic Jeffersonian architecture, spacious grounds, and a park-like character. Historic Fredericksburg's 40-square-block historic district is walking distance from campus. Several large, modern shopping and entertainment complexes are nearby. UMW provides a variety of residential options, from traditional residence halls to modern apartments. Currently under development is a new retail and garden apartment complex next to campus. More than 100 clubs and organizations are offered along with a top NCAA Division III athletic program. The University recently reopened Lee Hall, an expanded facility providing enhanced student services, a new bookstore, and "Underground" snack bar/coffee house. UMW students are bright, multitalented, and involved. The University environment is friendly and welcoming, and UMW places great value on diversity within its student body. |
