More serious athletes can play on the Grizzlies varsity sports teams, which compete in the NCAA Division III Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Notable Franklin students include Robert Wise, who won Academy Awards for directing The Sound of Music and West Side Story. He first attended Franklin as a journalism major, but had to drop out when the Great Depression hit.
