| Mission | |
| School mission: | Founded in 1972, George Mason University has become a major educational force and has earned a reputation as an innovative, entrepreneurial institution that has gained national distinction in a range of academic fields. In 2008, U.S. News & World Report named Mason the number one national university to watch on its list of "Up-and-Coming Schools." Mason was cited as an institution that has recently made the most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, students, campus or facilities. Opportunities for students abound both inside and outside the classroom in areas such as internships at nationally and internationally recognized organizations, from Fortune 500 companies to the Kennedy Center. Many Mason graduates continue employment with places they interned, or remain in the area to take advantage of the outstanding job market. The university has recently partnered with the Smithsonian Institution to create the Smithsonian Semester, which allows students to live on-site at the Conservation and Research Center of the Smithsonian's National Zoo and study global-scale conservation issues and civic concerns. Mason has one of the largest global education programs in the world, ranking second among U.S. doctoral institutions by the Institution of International Education for the number of students who study abroad. Mason has programs in more than 30 countries, with reciprocal relationships with universities in Russia, Korea, China, and Germany. Mason's undergraduates come from all 50 states and 125 countries; 75% of freshmen live on campus. In 2008, the university opened a new 40,000 square-foot state-of-the-art sustainable dining facility, designed to exceed "green" standards, with an emphasis on recycling and the use of biodegradable products. A growing institution, Mason is in the midst of a building boom, investing more than $500 million between 2002 and 2013. Currently under construction are multiple new academic buildings, an on-campus conference center and hotel, and what will soon be one of the largest academic, residential communities in Virginia. An expanding research institution, with double the national average funding growth in the past five years, Mason maintains its commitment to innovative education and successful student learning. |
