Mission
School mission: One of the few master's level public regional universities in the nation with a Rhodes scholar, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire prepares its students to compete with students from institutions throughout the nation for prestigious awards, top graduate schools and desirable jobs. In recent years, UW-Eau Claire has had more students receive Fulbright grants than most master's level schools in the country. It's the only Wisconsin school on the most recent list of top Fulbright producers in the master's category. Several faculty members also have received Fulbright awards in recent years. UW-Eau Claire is a leader among comprehensive universities in the number of chemistry graduates earning Ph.D.s, and it ranks near the top 25 percent nationally in the number of accounting students who pass the CPA exam the first time. UW-Eau Claire graduates more physics majors than most colleges in the nation, according to the American Institute of Physics. Two students have received Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships and a third received an honorable mention. Goldwater scholarships are considered the premier undergraduate award of its type in the fields of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering. We're one of four undergraduate institutions in the country to have four or more Dreyfus teacher-scholar winners on its faculty. In recent years, several science and math faculty have received large grant awards from the National Science Foundation, while history and education faculty have secured U.S. Department of Education grants. Our nationally recognized undergraduate student-faculty research program provides research opportunities often available only to graduate students at large schools. Hundreds of students in many disciplines are involved in research with faculty. Research often in published in prestigious journals, such as in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Our music program features faculty and students who perform worldwide, with venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to the Vatican. UW-Eau Claire provides students with experiences that will help them succeed in a global economy. We offer many programs that allow students to study, live and work in international settings, as well as programs that bring international students to campus. UW-Eau Claire sends more students abroad that any other master's level institution in Wisconsin, and it ranks 14th nationally among all master's schools in the number of students who study abroad. Almost 25 percent of our students study abroad in more than 30 countries. More than 70 percent of those students live abroad for a semester or more. A growing number of education students complete their student teaching in international settings. An increasing number of students earn scholarships through competitive programs to study and conduct research abroad. And more students are completing internships in international settings. Students also are having meaningful experiences at sites within the United States, with activities ranging from civil rights pilgrimages to the south to volunteer work in tribal schools in northern Wisconsin to research in western mountain ranges. UW-Eau Claire is the only public university in north western and north central Wisconsin that offers a baccalaureate nursing degree. The program graduates more than 100 students a year, many of whom receive multiple job offers. The university is one of just a handful of public regional universities in the country - and the only one in Wisconsin - to include service-learning as a graduation requirement. Each year about 2,000 students generate more than 100,000 community-service hours. It's estimated that the value of students' service totals more that $1.5 million a year. UW-Eau Claire was named in the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for General Community Service. UW-Eau Claire is a signatory to the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment.
