| Mission | |
| School mission: | Stonehill College, founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1948, is an academically challenging, welcoming community on a beautiful, vibrant campus just outside of Boston. Our mission is "to educate the whole person so that each graduate thinks, acts, and leads with courage toward the creation of a more just and compassionate world." EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING: Stonehill is in the top 10% of colleges nationwide in enriching educational experiences such as internships, study abroad, and co-curricular programs, according to the National Survey of Student Engagement. Over 80% of our students complete an internship, study abroad, or practicum and field experience by the time they graduate. Stonehill students intern nationally and internationally in locations from New York City, Washington, D.C., and Boston to Dublin, London, Paris, and Geneva. The Institute of International Education ranks Stonehill 13th in the country among baccalaureate institutions for semester study abroad programs. A total of 242 Stonehill students studied abroad this academic year, in programs that spanned 24 countries from Argentina to China to South Africa. CORNERSTONE PROGRAM: The core of Stonehill's "liberal arts-plus" curriculum is the Cornerstone Program. Through this initiative, students are prepared for a life of learning, leadership, and responsible citizenship by taking interdisciplinary Learning Communities, courses in ethics, the sciences, language, and more, and a major Capstone course for seniors in which students demonstrate mastery of their academic discipline. INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION: Classes are kept small so that Stonehill's accomplished and accessible faculty can champion and challenge our students during all four years. Since its inception in 1996, the Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Program has involved 295 students working alongside professors to conduct, publish, and present research in a broad range of disciplines from biochemistry to education. ATHLETICS MEET ACADEMICS: Stonehill ranks #2 in NCAA Division II academic/athletic colleges in the country according to the National Collegiate Scouting Association, as well as ranking consistently at the top level across all three NCAA Divisions, including powerhouses such as Duke, Stanford, and Notre Dame. Nearly 50% of students involved in athletic programs achieve GPAs of 3.2 or higher; the average GPA of all 350+ current student-athletes is 3.1. CHARACTER AND VALUES: As a Catholic college, Stonehill has a strong commitment to community service. Each year, approximately 1,400 Stonehill students participate in volunteer outreach. Last year, our students provided more than 41,000 hours of service to numerous nonprofit and civic groups. Our significant opportunities for community service this year include six alternative spring break H.O.P.E. trips for nearly 170 students to sites from Honduras to the Gulf Coast and Texas. Since their inception in 1998, more than 600 students have gone on H.O.P.E. trips in the U.S. and abroad. STRONG OUTCOMES: Our students and alumni succeed because the entire college community collaborates to help them develop the knowledge, skills, and character to meet their professional goals and live lives of purpose and integrity. Of a recent Stonehill graduating class, 92% were employed within one year of graduation at corporations like Goldman Sachs and Brigham and Women's Hospital, 38% attended medical, law, or other graduate programs at institutions like Georgetown and Brown, and 8% joined or applied for a year-long volunteer service program such as the Peace Corps and Teach for America. "Everyone on campus wants to help you achieve your fullest potential. I think that in a very real sense, getting that sort of nurturing attention makes it easier for you to contribute to the community in turn." - John Hanawalt '10 |
