School mission and unique qualities (as provided by the school):

Founded in 1930, Brooklyn College's academic programs are considered to be the most rigorous among the senior colleges within the City University of New York system. Located in what many consider to be the most culturally vibrant borough in the city, Brooklyn College has nationally-recognized, comprehensive programs and a world-class faculty in the arts and sciences, education, and business. The college enrolls more than 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students who reflect the city's rich ethnic and cultural diversity and global connections. Most are attracted to the college because it provides them unparallel access to a stellar academic experience, especially within the Honors Academy. A cohort of six stellar programs, the Academy attracts academically talented students who wish to be intellectually challenged. From their first day on campus, each student receives on-going advisement and proactive counseling. For all students, the college offers the opportunity to engage in research across the disciplines, to participate in exciting study abroad programs and to explore career options through a wide range of internships.

Brooklyn College is a student-centered campus, supporting more than 140 chartered campus groups, including academic clubs, service and honor societies, athletics groups, special interest groups, and performing arts organizations. Special lectures, concerts, and events are scheduled throughout the year. The Student Center, fraternities and sororities provide social and community service activities. The Hillel Foundation, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, and Newman Center are among the many special interest clubs on campus. Students publish three newspapers, magazines, and journals, and also operate WBCR, the Brooklyn College radio station. As a public institution, Brooklyn College takes seriously its community responsibilities by reaching out to cultural and social organizations throughout the borough and Manhattan. Students and faculty alike participate in community-based learning experiences, including a unique program with the National Parks Service that encourages an appreciation of and care for the surrounding environment. The college is especially proud of its partnership with public high schools which seeks to encourage and enable students to pursue a college degree.

The campus, which is frequently cited as among the most beautiful in the country, is undergoing a major capital construction and renovation program with more than $500 million allocated by New York State in capital funds. The West Quad Center, the first new building on campus since the 1970s, opened in fall 2009 and houses extensive student services and state-of-the-art physical education, fitness and athletic facilities. A new performing arts center is under construction, and a science complex is on the drawing boards and will soon take shape. In addition, a new graduate school in film will take shape at Steiner Studios at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a leading facility for commercial and independent film productions, as well as music videos and post production work, where enrolled students will be able to receive hands-on experience and valuable industry contacts.
