School mission: The University of Missouri was founded in 1839 in Columbia as the first public university west of the Mississippi River. Today with 30,000 students from every U.S. state and 100 countries and 248,000 alumni worldwide, Missouri's flagship university is a land-grant institution that emphasizes service to citizens and the state's major public research university.
