| Mission | |
| School mission: | SUNY Cobleskill is an accredited polytechnic residential college with more than 50 academic programs. It is one of the few baccalaureate institutions in the United States where a student may also choose to earn an associate's degree. Set in bucolic surroundings, only 35 minutes from Albany, SUNY Cobleskill is conveniently located in the "middle of everywhere". Small class sizes ensure students receive individual attention from a diverse and accomplished faculty. Modeling experiential education, SUNY Cobleskill provides more than 2500 students opportunities for discovery and practice beyond the classroom. The college offers the best of all worlds: tranquil surroundings with easy access to major metropolitan areas, a government center and boundless cultural, educational and recreational opportunities. SUNY Cobleskill is one of three remaining state agriculture and technology colleges, has the state's only contiguous farm, and hosts New York State's only bachelor's degree programs in Turfgrass Management. With an 18 to one student/faculty ratio, SUNY Cobleskill offers a nurturing environment reminiscent of a private college, for a public college price. SUNY Cobleskill offers a career-oriented curriculum in quality programs such as agricultural sciences and technologies, business and computer technologies, early childhood, culinary arts, environmental and natural resources, hospitality and tourism, liberal arts and sciences and plant science. New programs, new courses and baccalaureate degree programs are continuously being developed to meet the needs of students. Use of computers, personnel management and other skills necessary for success in a career are coupled with the college's traditional expertise in hands-on, practical education. The highest priority of SUNY Cobleskill's expert faculty and staff continues to be individual attention to student needs. SUNY Cobleskill graduates transfer to places such as: Cornell University; State University of New York at Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, Stony Brook, Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse and others. A unique early medical school assurance program allows eligible students to apply for guaranteed admission to Upstate Medical University at the close of their freshman year, without ever having to take the MCATs. Articulation agreements ensure easy transfer to other colleges within the State University of New York system. The 780-acre campus is set among rolling hills, woods, fields and streams. Facilities include nationally-accredited child development and child care centers, modern food preparation kitchens and a student-operated restaurant and travel center. The equestrian center, opened in fall 2005, includes a 34,000sf indoor arena, breeding and training facilities, and room to board over 70 horses. The 200-cow dairy facility boasts cutting-edge herd and waste management technology. The agricultural complex also includes an arboretum, golf greens, a fish hatchery, fourteen greenhouses, and agricultural engineering laboratories. The college has received over $8 million in federal and state funding to launch applied research in the conversion of agricultural and municipal solid wastes into clean energy. The new project will afford many opportunities for undergraduate students to observe and participate in this research. Construction of a new $37 million agricultural science center is expected to begin in 2009. SUNY Cobleskill is committed through its strategic plan and the desires of its constituents to incorporating sustainability into its curricula and business practices, and the college is a signatory on the Talloires Declaration. |
