| School mission: | Mount Mercy College, located in Cedar Rapids, is a Catholic college in the Mercy tradition that provides a diverse group of students a practical and relevant foundation for leading successful, meaningful lives. An engaged and welcoming campus community, Mount Mercy offers students a learning environment that is deeply personal while providing academically challenging courses and vibrant programs and experiences. Established by the Sisters of Mercy in 1928, Mount Mercy has grown in size and reputation as a premier college of choice, offering students a personalized, challenging, engaging and practical education. Under the direction of President Christopher R.L. Blake, Ph.D., who joined Mount Mercy in July 2006, the institution began offering graduate programs in business and education, as well as continuing to provide 38 major areas of study for baccalaureate programs. The Mount Mercy Board of Trustees recently adopted a new strategic plan, and endorsed the goal of Mount Mercy College transitioning to Mount Mercy University by 2012. The strategic plan focuses on five major themes: a vibrant teaching and learning environment; student experiences; sustainable institutional resources; visibility, marketing and outreach; and Catholic identity and Mercy mission. Mount Mercy is home to more than 1,500 traditional age students, transfer students, adult accelerated students and graduate students. The institution's talented and dedicated faculty blend a liberal arts education with professional preparation while encouraging students to strive for excellence through service to the common good, strategic communication, reflective judgment, and purposeful living. Mount Mercy is distinguished by graduates committed to service, both in their choice of career and personal volunteer service to the community. Of graduates over the past three years: 96% are in employed or in graduate school within six months of graduation; 43% remain in the Cedar Rapids metropolitan area; and 74% remain in Iowa to work, live and serve. Mount Mercy College provides students with a quality education grounded in service to the common good. Mount Mercy's emphasis on practicum and internship experiences opens doors to full-time employment following graduation and prepares students for the challenges of the working world. Students on "the Mount" benefit from a vibrant campus environment and active student life. Mount Mercy is a great place to be a student-athlete, succeeding in the classroom and on the field. Our intercollegiate teams, the Mount Mercy Mustangs, compete in the NAIA Division II as members of the Midwest Collegiate Conference. The Mustangs own more than 35 conference championships and numerous 43 NAIA National tournament appearances. If you enjoy competition in a less structured environment, try intramural sports like basketball, volleyball, golf, flag football, and softball, or choose from more than 30 campus clubs and organizations.
