| Mission | |
| School mission: | Think of a specialty and chances are good we offer a degree in that subject. In fact, we offer more than 200 programs for our undergraduates. Our university consistently receives national recognition for its outstanding programs, whether it is genomic research in soybeans in the College of Agricultural Sciences, with its 2,000-acre farms; advanced friction studies in the College of Engineering; teacher preparation and the School of Social Work in the College of Education and Human Services; or ecology and nanomaterials science in the College of Science. Our undergraduates enjoy many research opportunities, which is rare among major universities. Freshmen participate in our newest research program, called Research Rookies. Other students are involved in the Research-Enriched Academic Challenge, in which they win grants of up to $1,500 for research projects and work with faculty mentors. These are just two examples of programs designed to provide our undergraduates with early exposure to the benefits of research. Our students distinguish themselves in a variety of pursuits. For example, speech communication students win national debate championships; students in radio-television capture national student Emmy Awards for an alternative TV news magazine; and our student wind ensemble performs on the national and international stages - Carnegie Hall in 2008 and in China in 2009. |
