Big Picture
Murfreesboro is definately a college town in the best sense of the word. There's lots of opportunities for good food, inexpensive entertainment options, employment, and shopping. Traffic is pretty commuter friendly as well. The campus is very large which can make it seem a little impersonal since many classes are also large, limiting student-instructor interaction. The most frequent student complaint is always, parking. The parking here is horrible, you generally need to arrive on campus at least forty five minutes early for any class that starts after 9:00 a.m, even then any parking space you find guarantees you a twenty to twenty-five minute walk to class. The off campus public transportation has been a little unreliable to date. It's hard to plan on taking public transportation when the schedule varies as often as it does concerning arrival times.
Academic Life
The academics at MTSU vary from department to department. In a small major departmant, such as the Geology Department, the student-instructor interaction is exceptional. Your instructors know you by name, usually teach you for multiple courses before graduation, serve as guides through individual research opportunities, and organize lots of extracurricular activities. The larger departments, such as Elementary Education or Music Industry, are much more impersonal. Some students go their entire college career without meeting their major advisor face to face, or interacting with them at all. Generally, it seems like the education here is geared more towards practical applications, such as getting a job, than for learning for it's own sake.
Student Body
Students here at MTSU are a pretty diverse group. There are multiple religious, political, and ethnic groups on campus and they all appear to be pretty active. There are also groups that are centered around recreational activities and intellectual interests. Jeans and t-shirts are pretty standard student wear, but not exclusively. Lots of people prefer to express themselves through their attire which creates a nice, usually very colorful, mix. Lower to Upper Middle class is the general financial background. The opportunities here for a good education with the help of state funding make MTSU appealing to students who need a little financial help to go to college.
