Mission
School mission: Founded in 1930, Brooklyn College is one of the eleven senior colleges of the City University of New York. The College has been consistently ranked for the past six years by Princeton Review as among America's Best Value Colleges. In Princeton Review's 2009 guidebook, The Best 368 Colleges, Brooklyn College was ranked third in the nation for diversity. Located in what many now consider to be the most culturally vibrant borough in the city, the four-year liberal arts college boasts a park-like twenty-six-acre campus, with Georgian-style buildings and a landscaped Quadrangle. Respected nationally for its rigorous ivy-league quality academics, the College enrolls more than 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students who are representative of the ethnic and cultural diversity of Brooklyn and New York City. Over the last eight years, the college has appointed some 273 new full-time faculty members, more than half of its full-time teaching faculty, who hold higher degrees from Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Oxford, and similarly prestigious universities. Among them are Pulitzer Prize-winners, Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellows, and national grant researchers. What attracts students to the College are its innovative programs, strong internship opportunities, and extensive study-abroad selections. The College's admissions criteria are increasingly selective, and high-achieving high school students apply in ever-larger numbers for admission to the Macaulay Honors College at Brooklyn College, where they join other strong students who make up the College's prestigious Honors Academy, a federation of six honors programs. Perhaps the best measure of an excellent college is the success of its students. The College ranks nineteenth nationally in the number of undergraduates who have gone on to receive Ph.D.'s. The Core Curriculum is the College's signature program. Long a national model, it was revised and strengthened in 2006 and offers students an unrivaled general education. The On-Course Advantage (TOCA) enables dedicated students to graduate in the traditional four years by giving them priority at registration, guaranteed access to required courses, and one-on-one advising throughout their course of study. Brooklyn College is a student-centered campus; it has expanded its Center for Academic Advisement and Student Success in order to make individual, pro-active advising available to everyone. As a public institution, Brooklyn College takes seriously its public responsibilities. It has actively broadened its engagement with the surrounding neighborhood and with Brooklyn's cultural and social organizations and is most proud of its partnership with high schools throughout the borough. A major capital construction and renovation program is currently in progress at Brooklyn College, more than $500 million allocated to the College by New York State in capital funds. The West Quad Building, the first new building on campus since the 1970s, opens in fall 2009 and will house student services and state-of-the-art physical education and athletic facilities. A privately owned and run student residence will open two blocks from the campus in fall 2009, as well. A new performing arts center and a new science complex are on the drawing boards of well-known architectural firms.
