Founded in 1930, Brooklyn College is considered one of the best senior colleges within the City University of New York. Located in what many consider to be the most culturally vibrant borough in the city, Brooklyn College is a comprehensive liberal arts institution with nationally recognized programs and world-class faculty in the arts and sciences, education, and business. The college enrolls more than 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students who reflect the city's rich ethnic and cultural diversity and global connections. Most are attracted to the college because it provides them unparallel access to a stellar academic experience, especially within the Honors Academy. A cohort of six stellar programs, the Academy attracts academically talented students wishing to be intellectually challenged. For all students, the college offers the opportunity to engage in research across the disciplines, to participate in exciting study abroad programs and to explore career options through a wide range of internships. To ensure that each student receives the best college experience and preparation for graduation, the college provides on-going advisement and proactive counseling. Over the last eight years, the college has appointed close to 300 new full-time faculty members, more than half of its full-time teaching faculty, who hold higher degrees from Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Oxford, and similarly prestigious universities. Among them are Pulitzer Prize-winners, Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellows, and significant national scientific grant researchers. The college ranks nineteenth nationally in the number of undergraduates who have gone on to receive Ph.D.'s. The Core Curriculum is the college's signature program. Long a national model, it was revised and strengthened in 2006 and offers students an unrivaled general education. Brooklyn College is a student-centered campus, supporting more than 140 chartered campus groups, including academic clubs, service and honor societies, athletics groups, special interest groups, and performing arts organizations. Special lectures, concerts, and events are scheduled throughout the year. On the campus's two quads and in the Student Center, fraternities and sororities provide social and community service activities. The Hillel Foundation, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, and Newman Center are among the many special interest clubs on campus. Students publish newspapers, magazines, and journals, and also operate WBCR, the Brooklyn College radio station. As a public institution, Brooklyn College takes seriously its community responsibilities by reaching out to cultural and social organizations throughout the borough, as well as Manhattan. Students and faculty alike participate in community-based learning experience that encourages an appreciation of and care for the surrounding environment. It is especially proud of its partnership with public high schools which seeks to encourage and enable students to pursue a college degree. The campus is undergoing a major capital construction and renovation program with more than $500 million allocated by New York State in capital funds. The West Quad Building, the first new building on campus since the 1970s, opened in fall 2009 and houses extensive student services and state-of-the-art physical education, fitness and athletic facilities. A new performing arts center is under construction, and a science complex is on the drawing boards and will soon take shape. |
