| Mission | |
| School mission: | Binghamton University offers the attention of a small college with the choices and opportunities of a research university. Our students are among the most gifted in the nation and our faculty are devoted teachers and mentors who are committed to helping students obtain the skills they need to become global citizens. Binghamton has excellent facilities for learning and recreation - and students use them - attending concerts, participating in clubs and intramurals, hiking the nearly 200-acre nature preserve and cheering on 21 Division I athletic teams. The local community offers professional baseball and hockey, opera, First Fridays featuring local artists' works, and dozens of parks and activities. Wired and wireless, the campus has state-of-the-art labs, four libraries and dozens of learning spaces for students to meet and collaborate on coursework and projects. Our residential communities have a close-knit feel that nurtures relationships and opportunities, and includes a faculty master assigned to each community to help link living and learning. Our Discovery Program offers additional resources for freshman and upperclassmen to link all aspects of their University life and enhance Binghamton's living-learning environment. With over 425 programs to choose from, Binghamton has one of the largest study-abroad programs in the nation. Binghamton students also take advantage of our 3/2 and 4/1 accelerated or combined-degree programs, allowing them to complete bachelor's and master's degrees in five years rather than six years - saving time and tuition dollars while increasing their marketability with employers. Recent graduates command top starting salaries because of their critical-thinking, analytical and communication skills. The Career Development Center (CDC) is a resource every student seeks out. Whether researching career options or seeking assistance with exploring job fields, launching an employment search for a semester internship, a summer job, or their first full-time job, students have access to online career tools, resume writing assistance, interview skills coaching, staff and peer advising. The CDC annually hosts on-campus spring and fall job fairs featuring up to 400 employers. Recognized nationally with seven major awards for our achievements in internationalization, Binghamton excels in providing a broad range of opportunities that provide students with the perspective to become world citizens. Our programs are multi-faceted, innovative and comprehensive. Our students take three semesters of foreign language, many study abroad, and on campus, there are more than 2,000 students from over 100 nations. Cultural and international festivals abound on campus. Our Languages Across the Curriculum program promotes use of languages other than English in non-language courses helping students become aware of intercultural perspectives and providing opportunity for them to continuously use their language skills. Together, Binghamton's faculty and students create a stimulating campus environment that is supportive, rewarding and fun. From designing sensors that detect toxins, to writing and directing plays, to conducting research studies for local municipalities to improve services and programs for area residents, to promoting the "greenness" of campus through reduce, reuse, recycle events and programs, Binghamton students thrive in a diverse community that promotes the vigorous exchange of innovative ideas. |
