Augustana students can also explore more than 60 clubs, as well as Greek-letter honors societies and The Augustana Mirror newspaper. Student athletes can play at the intramural level or try out for the many Augustana Vikings varsity sports teams, which compete in the NCAA Division II Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Notable Augustana alumni include Mary Hart, who broke the Guinness World Record for the longest-serving entertainment news host for her work on Entertainment Tonight, which she exited in May 2011.

School mission and unique qualities (as provided by the school):

Augustana College, founded in 1860, is a selective, private, residential, comprehensive college (liberal arts and professional) affiliated with the Lutheran church. Challenging academics, a friendly, vibrant community and reasonable cost come together to create an exceptional value for our 1750 students. The Augustana community (faculty, alumni, students, administrators, and staff) strives to embody Five Core Values: 1) Christian - As a college of the church, we welcome all faiths, encourage spiritual growth, and relate Christian faith and ethics to learning and service. 2) Liberal Arts - Augustana provides an education of enduring worth by affirming that teaching and learning are central and life-long; the breadth of our curriculum provides students with the skills and flexibility necessary for successful careers in a complex world. 3) Excellence - Engaged students, great teaching, high standards, and integrity lead to successful outcomes. 4) Community - Augustana fosters an environment of participation, caring, respect, and empowerment. 5) Service - Students enter to learn and leave to serve.

The heart of the Augustana experience is a rigorous academic program taught by a remarkable collection of professors. All are passionate about their disciplines and their teaching. Publishing, conducting research, and attaining national prominence have helped to create the rich liberal arts environment that exists on campus today. Over 80 percent of Augustana's full-time tenured and tenure-track professors hold the highest degree in their field. The College offers over 50 majors and pre-professional specializations within a 4-1-4 academic calendar. Extensive internship, study-abroad and undergraduate research programs supplement the curriculum. Civitas, the College's honors program, provides an environment for students who desire an even more challenging and rigorous intellectual experience.

Located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a city of 156,000 and one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in America, Augustana is in a prime location for anyone wishing to live in a great small city that offers valuable experience in their field before graduation. Sioux Falls is the business, health care, research, shopping, entertainment, sports, and cultural center of the region. Our largest employers include Sanford Health, Avera Health, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, and the Sioux Falls School District. The city is also home to four semi-professional sports teams: the Fighting Pheasants (baseball), Storm (arena football), Stampede (hockey), and SkyForce (basketball). These organizations represent a small sampling of the many internships, practicums, and part-time jobs that enhance and support the education of Augustana students. For example, our students may join scientists from around the world at the EROS Data Center to work on United Nations projects and to study satellite imagery or do cancer research with a physician at Sanford Health.

For outdoor recreation enthusiasts, Sioux Falls has a fantastic 22-mile bike trail that loops around the city following the Big Sioux River, with several adjoining public parks. Great Bear Recreation Park offers downhill and cross-country skiing as well as snowboarding in the winter and hiking trails in the summer. Sioux Falls is also home to a number of golf courses, a water park, and of course, Falls Park, the city's namesake. Finally, South Dakota is known for its spectacular hunting and fishing.

Augustana participates in NCAA Division II athletics in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and has recently made over $16 million in improvements to its athletic facilities. Students are involved in outstanding performing and visual arts programs, campus ministry, service learning, student leadership, environmental awareness, and more.
