Mission
School mission: Ambitious, diverse and committed to cutting-edge research, The University of Texas at Arlington is uniquely positioned in the heart of North Texas, the fastest-growing metro area in the nation. UT Arlington invites students with a big vision for the future to become hands-on partners in their education, working alongside the University's 1,176 instructional faculty, many of whom are recognized nationally and internationally for their expertise. UT Arlington's 25,000 students pursue more than 180 undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees in an extensive range of disciplines, both at the Arlington campus and our growing UT Arlington Fort Worth Center, located in the historic Santa Fe Freight Building in downtown Fort Worth. UT Arlington challenges its students and faculty to "Be a Maverick", rewarding bright minds and independent thinkers who achieve distinction in the community, the classroom and the research laboratory. In fact, research expenditures at UT Arlington have more than tripled over the past decade, to $66.6 million in the 2007-08 fiscal year. Similarly, the numbers of invention disclosures, patent applications and licensing agreements also are on the rise. That means that more research developed by UT Arlington undergraduates and graduate students is addressing real-world needs. Bioengineering faculty, for example, are collaborating on research using digital micro-mirrors to help surgeons be more precise during biopsy procedures and prevent damage to healthy tissue. School of Nursing students experience real-world conditions in UT Arlington's Smart Hospital, which boasts 30 high-tech patient simulators in one of only six sites nationwide recognized as a Center of Excellence in Simulation by Laerdal Medical. The University is committed to doubling the number of licensed nursing graduates by 2012 to address Texas' critical shortage of registered nurses. In the College of Education, UT Arlington is training more educators in the critical areas of early childhood and bilingual education. Researchers also are embarking on a $2.85 million National Science Foundation grant that will use UT Arlington graduate students to boost mathematics education in public schools. UT Arlington's physical makeup is changing, too. More than 17 percent of students now live on campus with ready access to a rich array of student life opportunities. A state-of-the art $116 million Engineering Research Building will open in January 2011, housing multidisciplinary research, teaching labs and support areas for the colleges of engineering and science. The building itself is designed with energy-saving features to meet Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) Silver certification standards. The University also is developing a 6,500-seat special events center, a home for UT Arlington athletics, convocations and community events scheduled to open in 2012. UT Arlington has been recognized as an outstanding educational value and one of the best universities in the nation for Hispanic students. Its graduate architecture program was named one of the top programs among southern U.S. universities in 2008 in Design Intelligence's list of "America's World Class Schools of Architecture". UT Arlington's School of Urban and Public Affairs placed in the top half of programs ranked by U.S. News and World Report's "America's Best Graduate Programs 2009".
