| School mission: | Grand Valley State University is a four-year public university in West Michigan providing undergraduate and graduate education to nearly 24,000 students. It has established a reputation for creating unique learning opportunities that attract students from across the state, throughout the country, and all over the world. Its liberal education focus emphasizes critical thinking, creative problem solving, and cultural understanding preparing students for life in a fast-changing world. It fosters a commitment to economic, social, and environmental sustainability and an inclusive campus that values diversity. Through this forward-thinking education, students are empowered to positively affect the global community now and in the future. With 71 undergraduate and 27 graduate degree programs, Grand Valley offers an academic experience one would expect from a small private college and the programs and resources only available from a major university. Virtually all of the university's more than 200 areas of academic study incorporate the skills acquired through its liberal education focus into the learning process. The result is that graduates are better prepared to meet new challenges with confidence and professional expertise. Professional preparation is also important at Grand Valley. Each year more than 5,000 students gain real-world work experience through internships, practica, and student teaching. Preparing students to achieve at a higher level puts a premium on teaching excellence. Grand Valley faculty come from some of the country's leading institutions to do what they do best - teach. To this end, classes are taught by faculty members, not graduate assistants, providing opportunities for collaboration between professors and students and creating undergraduate learning experiences typically only available to graduate students at other schools. Supporting this network of high-achieving students and faculty are contemporary campuses in Allendale and Grand Rapids, Michigan's second largest city. Both campuses include state-of-the-art learning, living, and research centers. Grand Valley also has a campus in nearby Holland and regional centers in Muskegon and Traverse City. In addition, the university has nearly 300 clubs and organizations that keep students involved and active. Plus, Grand Valley features championship-level NCAA Division II sports, and a vast array of athletic, social, religious, and fine arts activities.
