| School mission: | Abilene Christian University is an innovative, Christ-centered community that engages students in authentic spiritual and intellectual growth, equipping them to make a difference in the world. The incorporation of cutting-edge technology into learning, has positioned the university as a leader in the integration of mobile learning technology. As the first university in the nation to provide an iPhone or iPod touch to incoming freshmen, ACU continues to explore ways to enhance learning through technology. These mobile devices play an important role in the university's innovative academic and social experiences. Freshmen use the mobile devices to receive homework alerts, answer in-class surveys and quizzes, and check their meal and account balances - among other useful web applications. Abilene Christian continues to receive worldwide recognition for its innovation both in and out of the classroom. ACU has received both national and international honors, recently being selected the winner of Alcatel-Lucent's first-ever Dynamic Enterprise Award, an award for its innovative communications solution that enhances the learning experience for today's higher education students. At the Handheld Learning Conference, a British educational conference, ACU was named one of three finalists for the Handheld Learning Innovation Award for Tertiary Education. ACU also received the Institutional Excellence in Information Communication Technology Award by the Association for Information Communications Technology Professionals in Higher Education. While ACU is affiliated with the Churches of Christ, the university welcomes all students who value the strong Christian environment and exceptional academic programs offered on the campus. More than 4,600 students attend ACU from all 50 states and 60 countries. There is a diverse and global environment, which cultivates a strong learning experience. The students are served by faculty members who focus on high academic teaching, scholarship and service. Undergraduates regularly participate in significant research projects alongside faculty members. ACU is a national leader in producing graduates who go on to complete their doctorates. The university includes the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Biblical Studies, Business Administration, Education and Human Services, the Graduate School, the Graduate School of Theology, the School of Information Technology and Computing, the School of Social Work, and the Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing. ACU's College of Business Administration remains in the company of some of the most respected business institutions in the nation, receiving official re-accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Only five percent of business schools in the world hold this accreditation. The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication features a new, state-of-the-art converged media newsroom where print, broadcast and online student media staffs work together in one large space. Few universities have constructed similar facilities and ACU is the first to combine a curricular/co-curricular partnership between the department and student media. The Body & Soul pre-med/pre-dental program at ACU offers students unique opportunities that prepare them for high acceptance into professional schools. Graduates are accepted into medical school at a rate almost double the national average. ACU's Teacher Education program is one of the top in the country, with graduates passing all state certification exams at 100 percent. The Particle Physics Research Team, consisting of ACU faculty and students, has recently received a research grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. As one of 11 university-led grant recipient teams, ACU will work with teams from other universities as part of the Department of Energy's Nuclear Energy Research Initiative. ACU's mission is to educate students for Christian service and leadership throughout the world. |
